Skin pigmentation concerns, including things like thread veins and sun spots, are among the most common complaints in aesthetics. At Nue Skin & Laser Clinic, many of our patients seek treatment for complexion imperfections, but we want you to know that many of these issues are preventable.

Preventing Skin Pigmentation

May 25th is International Skin Pigmentation Day, an important opportunity to discuss the causes of discolouration and how failing to protect your skin can lead to more serious concerns.

One of the biggest risk factors is sun damage, as harmful UVA and UVB rays in sunlight can penetrate the outer layer of the skin and cause sunburn, or even reach the deeper layers and cause damage to your skin cells. At the very least, this can result in unwanted changes to your skin tone, such as hyperpigmentation and sun spots, whilst also accelerating the ageing process. Premature ageing can start as early as your 20s when you fail to protect your skin.

If sun damage persists over time, it can even lead to skin cancer, which is the 5th most common cancer in the UK. There are more than 16,000 new instances of melanoma skin cancer every single year, and many of these could be prevented simply by wearing a strong and effective daily SPF. When we say daily, we mean daily as rays of sunlight can penetrate the cloud barrier and harm your skin even during the winter months and those overcast days.

You can also protect your skin by wearing protective clothing, like sun hats and shawls, and sticking to the shade. With that said, these things alone are not enough and sunscreen really is your most effective form of sun protection.

Pigmentation Treatment

Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, discolouration is simply unavoidable. You can’t completely avoid the sun, you can only do so much to protect your skin. The more you’re exposed to the sun, the more your risk of skin pigmentation increases.

From single lesions to full face procedures, our expert skin rejuvenation specialists know how to restore your formerly youthful, healthy complexion.
