Over the holidays it’s so easy to let things slip, especially when you’re unwinding and celebrating with loved ones. This is true of our skincare. But even if you maintain a basic skincare regimen each day, you can minimise the negative effects that go hand in hand with the winter months. In addition to this, there are also certain other things you can do that will have a bigger impact on your skin than you might imagine. Here are some of my top tips for healthy skin over the festive season.
Whatever The Weather
We all dream of a white Christmas, but are we prepared when it comes to the freezing temperatures? Irritation and dryness are common throughout the colder months, and there are many popular misconceptions about how to minimise these symptoms.
For example, while taking a hot shower might feel good in the moment, this can strip away your natural oils and dry your skin out even further. Instead, I recommend taking lukewarm showers and lowering your thermostat to a temperature that is still comfortable without blasting the heat out.
Another of my top tips for healthy skin over the festive season is to reevaluate your skincare regimen. Your products should be seasonal to offer your skin the best level of care, which is why now is the time to swap out things like moisturisers and cleansers for fragrance-free, alcohol-free products where possible. These ingredients add to dryness, so it’s best to avoid them where you can as the cold takes hold.
Finally, don’t stop applying your SPF just because the temperature has dropped. Your skin is at just as much of a risk of sun damage during the winter months as it is in summer!
Don’t Over-Indulge
Christmas is a time for good food and good fun, but it’s important to know when it becomes too much and how to reduce the effects of our over-indulgences. When it comes to alcohol, dehydration and inflammation of the skin are your biggest concerns. When you deprive your body of essential nutrients in this way, the results are increased dullness, dryness, congestion, redness and acne flare-ups.
As a rule, whether you’ve been drinking alcohol or not, make sure you drink plenty of water every single day to stay hydrated. Aim for around 15 cups of water a day and your body will be all the better for it.
This time of year is also a notorious excuse for letting our healthy diets slip. Christmas should certainly give us licence to treat ourselves, but be careful not to overdo it. Too many sugary foods in particular can lead to breakouts, premature ageing and loss of even skin tone. Maintaining a balanced diet is without a doubt one of our top tips for healthy skin over the festive season and beyond.
